Dowry!! Growing up in Mumbai, with my family, I thought Dowry was a problem
of the past and a social evil often seen in movies. A few years ago, I
learned better. My mom's cousin died with severe burns in a kitchen
accident. I was old enough to smell something fishy. After pestering my
mother long enough, I learned that it probably wasnt an accident since her
in-laws wanted more dowry. She had third degree burns over most of her body,
and lived through the night, with the pain. What gets to me the most, is
that her two children are still living with their father, and are definitely
old enough to comprehend what happened in the house that day. Her husband
and in-laws were never prosecuted and got away with it. How do people get
away with such a heinous crime? Why are they never prosecuted? They cant be
that smart to leave behind no clues to build a case with

Really sad to learn that this happened in your near family circle.
These greedy criminals can be brought to book, if there is enough
co-operation among the people seeking justice. Most people keep silent
in view of the future of the kids. Very very sad indeed. The law has
it's own limitations. Until the men themselves change (and they are
changing but slowly) out of their volition...........we have to wait
for that day.
