[nukkad] Lessons in Fellowship

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Beware of averages. The average human has one breast and one testicle.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The world has changed. You see it in the crime rate; you feel it in the angst
of the road user; you taste it at the buffet line where greed overwhelms
consideration.
Indeed, there are times when we look around us and wonder what has happened to
things like commom decency, courtesy, respect and manners. Not to mention
patience, humility and regard or concern for others.
After reading the books on The Lord of the Rings & more so after watching the
movies at the cinema, I wondered. Are these indeed forgotten virtues, fallen
out of all memory like the "One Ring" once it slipped from Isildur's finger?
The movies left me hugely entertained, but in many ways, it served me a
reminder as well. A firm reminder of how the simple principles of community can
lay mighty forces low and put the most fearsome foe to flight.
Here is what I captured all over again; I list the points it made and the
moments that sent the reminders to my tiny brain!.
(For those who have found LOTR to be a bore, pls skip to the next email at this
point)

The Point: Never underestimate anyone.
The moment: Saruman does not think Frodo, a hobbit, can achieve the task
Gandalf has set before him and yet this little guy does much more than just
hold on to the ring.
The Point: We usually know when the time comes that we must do the right thing,
but we are held back because of our own doubts and insecurities.
The moment: When the whole Council of Elrond disintegrated into a big squabble,
the smallest amoung their number knew what his task was and did the right thing
The Point: Sometimes we go through painful times or encounter difficult people,
but the experience will have some effect, possibly even a positive one on us.
Not all that seems bad is bad, there is a silver lining behind every cloud. We
might do better if we start looking for this silver lining instead of just
seeing the cloud all the time.
The Moment: Even the very wise cannot see all ends. My heart tells me that
Gollum has some part to play yet for good or ill, before this is over, Gandalf
to Frodo.
The Point: No matter how dire the situation you are in, you have to do the best
you can and make the most out of things.
The moment: "All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is gi ven
to us"-Gandalf to Frodo.
The Point: There are many things in life that one cannot accomplish alone.
Being united in mind and purpose can work wonders!
The Moment: Each member of the Fellowship played an important role and others,
such as King Theoden, joined in to help achieve the main objective of
destroying the ring. Samwise Gamgee, Frodo's faithful companion, stuck by him
till the very end. Sam unselfishly sacrificed his food and water to keep Frodo
alive.
The Point: When all seems hopeless, when problems or troubles threaten to
overwhelm, the best way to cope is to meet them head-on.
The Moment: Aragorn charging into battle againts impossible odds at the Black
Gate. Ride out with me. Ride out and meet them, for death and Glory! Aragorn to
Theoden.
The Point: Always hope for the best and go on, no matter how bleak it seems.
The moment: When Aragorn mustered the army to distract Sauron, it gave frodo
and Sam a chance to reach the Cracks of Doom. Aragorn and the others did not
even kno for sure that Frodo was still alive, but they just had to keep hoping
and believing. That's Faith.
The Point: Do not lose hope or give into fear. Be prepared to fight for what
you believe in and half the battle would be already won.
The Moment: Prepare for Battle! Gandalf tells the soldiers of Gondor, after the
broken and insane Denethor tells his men to run, for all is lost.
The Point: Always keep to your promises and dont let your mouth write cheques
that your furry feet can't cash
The Moment: I made a promise Mr. Frodo. Dont you ever leave him Samwise Gamgee.
And I dont mean to. Sam to Frodo.

Now we have come to the end of the cinematic saga of LOTR. The wars fought in
Middle-earth are in so many ways reflective of the struggles that continue all
over the world today; on a larger scale as well as in our more private,
personal battles..
The idealised characters in Tolkien's epic may have all sought action, where
the tendency of real people may be to seek escape from it.
If the true test of character is in the way we face up to our responsibilities
and the challenges that are placed before us, whether by choice, design or
accident; then we might do well to remember the words of Aragorn, as he rallies
the troops before the Black Gate of Mordor in the final film:
"A day may come when the courage of men fails. When we forsake our friends, and
break all bonds of fellowship. But it is not this day; this day....we fight!
