Like any politician Benazir too had her sides, one obverse and the other
reverse.
Whenever she was in Karachi during the tenure of our consul general in that
city,
Shri Bhatnagar, she always tied the thread of Rakhi to him on the day of
Raksha
Bandhan.
On more than one occassions she reiterated the fact of founding of Karachi
city by a
Hindu deity of the fisher folks of the coastal areas. Karachi is derived
from kolian-chi-
mai ( godess of fishermen ) ........ identical to mumbai's origin
.................... the English having much aversion to the mai ( since it
signified female deity and that too a Hindu ) dropped it to sound Kolianchi
to finally anglicize to Karachi. Benazir had to face the wrath of anti-Hindu
mullahs and anti-India elements of pak politics for such generous overtures
towards India's heritage to Pakistan.
As Guptaji mentioned, she was good for us.
