Many a time I have wondered why the riots of 2002 got such a detailed dissection in the media and the world at large. Was it just the extent of the pogrom? or was there something else that was different. And then like any other issue I "realised" it was the marketing! The Hindu Gujarati has always had a deep rooted hatred for the Muslim man perhaps from the many invasions and plunder of Gujarat that hosted the Somnath temple? Perhaps the many raids have left it inscribed on their DNA map. 2002 was not the first and before the Congress government claim the BJP were communal I think what happened before needs to be looked at as well! Read below from an article in the BBC archives. "Ahmedabad was also the scene of riots between Hindus and Muslims in 1969 which led to the deaths of at least 1,000 people. At the time there was a dispute over the leadership of the Congress Party between Indira Gandhi and Morarji Desai."
