I recollect the High Priest of Parsis, Dr. Dastur Dhalla, in my tender 
years, talking about the similarity between Sanskrit and Persian languages.

He was a fine example of  the well meaning soul going deep into the 
dharma of his birth, picking up a couple of Doctorates, one in German 
perhaps, and in later years wondering at the veracity and soundness of 
the tenets into which he had expended his whole life.

He would often speak of the Sapta Sindhu and the Hafta Hindu, the first 
in Sanskrit and the second in Persian, as meaning the same. What struck 
me was the number 7 given to the feeding tributaries of the Indus, which 
everyone knows are 5, the Jhelum, the Chenab, the Ravi which runs by 
Lahore, the Sutlej and the Beas.

Whereby the Panch Nadi, the Five Water, the Panch Aab, and the basin 
which held these, the Punj Ab, Punjab.

The mystery is, were there originally seven tributaries, and two have 
dried up, or have simply gone underground, disappeared.

Satellite picture show the great river having changed coiurtses several 
times in the last 100 000 years.

If the rivers were actually 7, as the ancient names Sapta Sindhu and 
Hafta Hindul affirm, then the land would be the Haft Ab, not Panjab.

If teh concept of disappearing ivers seems outrageous, think of the 
great Tri Veni.
