INTEGRITY IS THE FOUNDATION OF CHARACTER
Many people view integrity as an outdated idea, no longer applicable to them
in our fast-paced world. The need for integrity is perhaps as great as it
has ever been. It is the foundation upon which many other qualities are
built, such as respect, dignity, and trust.
* Integrity is defined as: adherence to moral and ethical principles;
soundness of moral character; honesty.
* Integrity is about the small things. Little things make or break
you. If you cross the line of your values - whether by an inch or by a mile
- you're still out of bounds. Honesty is a habit you ingrain by doing the
right thing all the time, day after day, week after week, year after year.
* Integrity is not to be confused with reputation. Reputation is what
you are supposed to be; character is what you are. A good reputation is
valuable but it exists because it's a reflection of your character.
* Integrity is not determined by circumstances. It is determined by
the choices you make. Make it a practice to take full responsibility for
your character. Set aside the negative experience you've had, including
difficult circumstances and people who have hurt you. Commit to truth,
reliability, honesty, and confidentiality as the pillars of your life.
* Integrity is your best friend. It keeps your priorities right. When
you're tempted to take shortcuts, it helps you stay the right course. When
others criticize you unfairly, it helps you keep going and take the high
road of not striking back. And when others' criticism is valid, integrity
helps you to accept what they say, learn from it, and keep growing.
* Be the real you all of the time. Be honest in your communication,
making your words match your actions.
* Do what you should do before you do what you want to do.
Fulfill your promises first. Never promise anything you
can't deliver.
* Trust is a benefit. The bottom line of integrity is that it allows
others to trust you. Without trust, you have nothing. It is the glue that
holds people together. If people see that you are driven by ego, jealousy,
or the belief that you are better, they will not trust you.
* Commit yourself to honesty, reliability, and confidentiality.
Don't try to hide your flaws. Be honest with people and
admit your weaknesses.
* Decide ahead of time that you don't have a price. As President
George Washington said, Few men have the virtue to withstand the highest
bidder. Decide before you are confronted that you won't sell your integrity:
not for power, revenge, pride, or money - any amount of money.
