Tip of the day: Voice your opinion at
               http://www.mumbai-central.com/sawaal/
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q. Why do men and women tend to fall for the cuveted stereotype of the
opposite sex [curvaceous, buxom female with thin waist or a tall, muscular,
hairy male?

A. It is a matter of the conflict between mind, heart and genes.

a. Mind or intellect or logic tells us that all are equal, that brain is
more important than brawn, that appearances are deceptive, that it is no
fault of the person if he or she has plain looks, that we should look for
inner beauty rather than outward gloss.

b. Heart tells us that we go in what appeals to the senses. Heart wins over
logic. There are scientific studies which show that:
    i. Mothers subconsciously favour their more beautiful, better looking
child;
    ii. When selection committees meet to interview a candidate, the members
of the committee make the decision about selection or non-selection
within first few seconds. Such decision is, to a significant extent,
based on the appearance of the candidate.

c. There is a group of scientists who believe that this is all genetically
determined. The basic interest of the species lies in presevation of the
species. Mating decisions are made based upon the millenia old collective
experience
which has shown that:
    i. A tall, well built, muscular, hairy male will give a progeny that
would be better equipped to fight and protect and survive;

    ii. A woman with lot of subcutaneous fat [soft, supple, non-muscular
body, ample breasts and buttocks] is better equipped to bear a child. [In
periods of scarcity and famine, such woman will have better chance of seeing
the pregnancy through and delivering a healthier child].

    iii. A silent, demure, innocent looking female will have more suitors.
[No male wants to keep on running after an intimidating, robust female who
is capable of being a physical rival and giving a fierce fight if she does
not want to be bothered by the male]. More suitors means she will have a
wider choice to make from the lot, as to whose sperm to choose for her ovum,
for maximum certainty that the offspring will be one which will be able to
fight, protect and survive.

I have somewhere in my archives details of concerned scientific studies. I
will be glad to revert to this topic once I lay hands on those.
