Correction. The Supreme Commander of Indian Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Air
Force) is the President of India, by constitution. The seniormost of the
three service chiefs is the Chairman of the committee of the service chiefs.
Tipnis is such a chief. But this honour of receiving foreign dignitaries
goes to other service chiefs by rotation. So for next such dignitary we will
see some other chief.

I am not sure about the Shivaji Maharaj incident. I think it happened at
Vijapur in Adilshah's court, when young Shivaji accompanied his father.

Mr. Tipnis is also the Supreme
Commander of all the 3 wings of Indian armed
foces.

This reminds me one of the incident in late 17th
century when Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj,
declined to salute Aurangjeb.
