Pune makes Bangalore bite the dust in household PC
penetration
Business Times Bureau

MUMBAI: When it comes to being truly wired, Pune
actually beats IT-savvy Bangalore. Surprised? Some
26.6 of every 100 households in Pune own personal
computer (PCs) compared to just 22.8 in Bangalore.
These are the findings of IDC India, an affiliate of a
U.S.-based IT market research firm, in a survey titled
'Exploring the IT Gold mines: Indian Homes'.

Significantly, last year, more than 13 cities recorded
double-digit growth in PC penetration compared to only
five in 1999. "A higher penetration in any one city
over the other can be attributed to the socio-cultural
background of the residents, education and a whole
gamut of factors tat drives the need for owning a PC,"
says IDC India manager Utpal Ghosh who was the team
leader for this particular survey.

According to the survey, education still remains the
major driving force for people buying PCs. People
largely purchase PCs to enhance the computer skills of
the family. The growth in IT-related jobs in India has
also contributed to higher PC penetration. While
education remains the fundamental reason for buying
PCs, communications and entertainment are other
reasons that encourage people to acquire computers.

As for Pune out surfing the Mecca of IT, Mr Ghosh says
that although this is not a part of the study, he
attributes it to the presence of a large number of
educational institutes which have a rub-off effect on
the households. "Be it bikes or a service, Pune is the
test market for almost all new product launches. The
education level of socio-economic classes (SEC) A and
B of Pune residents as compared to Bangalore is higher
and the same is true for work profiles," he adds.

The survey was conducted in cities which have a
population in excess of ten lakhs and the sample
comprised then cities with a population of between
five to ten lakhs. The target households belonged to
socio-economic classes A and B. the total installed
base of PCs in December 2000 stood at 11,28,312 units
in cities with a population of 5 lakh-plus and is
projected to grow by 72 per cent by 201-end.

As for the type of computer that figure on the
shopping list, assembled computers have captured 71
per cent of the market. However, there is a glimmer of
hope for branded computers as the market grew by 56
per cent to 1.25 lakh units last year.

Pattern of PC penetration in households (city-wise)
Pune …………………..26.6%
Bangalore ……………..22.8%
Mumbai ……………….21.6%
Delhi ………………….15.4%
Chandigarh ……………13.8%
Ahmedabad ……………13.3%
Lucknow ………………13.3%
