Nelson,

I completely agree with you. I am a Maharashtrian. And I have seen this
many times. It appears as if Maharashtrians do this more than people from
other states. But people from other states have these kind of feelings too.
Most of the times, these statements or feelings dont mean that they are not
proud of being Indians. But it is wrong to stress that anyway. Every Indian
must be proud of being Indian first.
One of my experiences : I live in Atlanta, and I went to see Nana
Patekar's 'Purush' a few months ago here in Atlanta. It was a great play and
amazing performances. The original play was in Marathi. But this one was in
Hindi with Ayesha julka being the only non-marathi in it. The rest were,
Chandrakant Gokhale, a 80 year veteran. He used to play hero's roles with
Deenanath Mangeshkar(Lata Mabngeshkar's father) as heroin in old Marathi
musical plays. Then there was Usha Nadkarni and of course Nana Patekar.
There were more Maharashtrians than people from any other states in the
audiance.
I felt great that these guys are doing a hindi version of the play so
that it has a greater reach. At the end of the play, when Nana PAtekar was
speaking to the audiance, a guy shouted, "Jai Maharashtra', to which Nana
Patekar replied "Jai Bharat bolo na Yaar. Yahi problem hain hamare saath.
Hum apasme hi ulzhe hue hain".

Regards
Milind Sathe
