> Do we believe that Indians can do no wrong?
Indians have proved more than once that they are not above making
mistakes. A lot of us wouldn't be in such dire poverty otherwise (unless
ofcourse our leaders tell us that that is exactly how they wanted things
to be).
>What Indian Goverments is doing in Kashmir is right?Who will decide? we
I believe that the way we are brought up in middle class ethics, we are
taught to believe that nationalism can never go wrong, patriotism is one
of the guiding lights of life and if you happen to lay down your life for
your country then it is a great thing. Very nice things and I don't wish
to belittle the sacrifices that our soldiers are making in Kashmir, but
when you have strong indoctrination , reason and logic take back seat.
One thing that I learned in my couple of years in US is that Government
can be wrong and I learned that from watching (OK don't laugh!) X-Files,
and US history in Vietnam. And before you guys draw any conclusions I am
not comparing Kashmir with Vietnam.
So a lot of students protested against
the 'nam war (their motives can be suspect, since drafting was on and who
wants to die and fight for some abstract cause of protecting democracy in
tropical forests), but that certainly wasn't the reason why US pulled out
of Vietnam war, it wasn't for letting the people be in peace either. They
pulled out because they were hurting and operations became unsustainable.
The US government did what they thought was good for the country , in both
starting the war and ending it , let us not confuse this for principles
and ideals etc. They thought going into vietnam was right but it wasn't
so.
It doesn't matter if I think that Indian govt. is right or wrong, I am
certain though that it won't give away Kashmir for some abstract thing.
The way I see it (and you may disagree with me ): People are miserable
because there is army in control of things and life is not normal. The
reason for army being there is an insurgency . There is an
insurgency because people were not happy with govt. Insurgency is not the
only way to protest against govt. , there are other ways that wouldn't
invovle a military intervention as a response. If you say that Pakistan is
responsible for all this , well so yes it is , and it is only doing what
it thinks is good for it (correctly or incorrectly)..... Islamic
brotherhood etc. is good only for getting finances from Riyadh.
>people sitting thousands of miles away in comfort or the people who have
>been left to miserable life.
> We better not let jingoism prevail. We can not force a brother to stay
>in joint family if he is not willing.
If a govt. were holding onto a region just for sake of jingoism then it
would be remiss in it's duty, similarly if govt. were to allow states to
secede just like that, there would be anarchy. Letting go or holding onto
a region will only be on basis of which is more profitable or
strategically suitable. Jingoism can be good for keeping emotional masses
opiated, but that's it.
