The origins of Mr Bal Thackeray (anglicized form of Thakre - how Indian is he?) were indeed in the 70's when he terrorised non Maharashtrians by saying that SOuth Indians must return to Siouth India. Bombay is for Maharashtrians only.

Tamilians in Matunga and elsewhere were terrified. I remember my father even considering leaving Bombay and returning to Madras or Delhi or Bangalore .. or anywhere BUT Bombay. Fortunately reality bowed its ugly head and Mr Thackeray was forced to acknowledge the contribution of non-Maharashtrians in making Bombay the city it is today.

The most fitting and poetic conclusion to such jingoism and regional chauvinism came about when the Shiv Sena held its annual programme (a few years ago - before the present day hall was build and before the previous hall was burnt down) at The Shanmukhananda Fine Arts and Sangeetha Sabha - about as South Indian a location as you could possibly get in a metropolitan city like Mumbai.

My dear Nelson - you would probably be called a 'maka paav' :-) But that is how it goes. The world is full of nick names for regionals - in the US it is Polack jokes. I am sure when you go to ANY part of ANY country in the world, you will come across such regional nick names. I only wish we would leave them at that in India instead of taking them to the next (and IMHO dangerous) level and taking the names seriously.
