Dear Nukkadites,

This same question lies foremost in my mind whenever I hear these strident cries from the neo-Maharashtrianites (to coin a word).

Mumbai (or Bombay as I like to call it) was built by the Parsis. Whether we like it or not, this is a truth that has been ignored by all and sundry for a LONG time. The Gujaratis are the primary trading community and commercial community that brought LIFE to Bombay. The Iranis brought the famous Irani restaurants. Actually yhe BSE would not exist except for the Gujuratis and marwaris and others that form the trading backbone that Bombay represents.

I have often pondered - if Maharashtrians were so great, why were they not abvle to do the same a lot earlier than the Gujuratis, Parsis, Iranis etc.?

Of course, this is NOT to belittle the contributions of Shivaji versus the Moghuls. Cannot forget the social reforms that had Maharashtra in the lead relative to most of India. Maharashtrians have indeed made large contributions to India. The stage in Maharahstra, especially the contributions of playwrights and stage actors and stage craft like natya Sangeet are so good that it brings tears to my eyes even today when I listen to them. 

But that does not mean that Maharashtra can now claim to be its own country and a law unto itself. Nor can the city of Bombay be held hostage because of a few illiterate goons.

Maybe it IS time for Bombay to be declared a state on its own - or at least make it a Centrally governed territory. At least that will put paid to the constant hankering by the Shiv Sena to rid Bombay of Bombayites.
