1. Virii was correct and common earlier. The trend towards 
americanised spellings, coupled with a trend towards 
simplification in general, and discarding the old in favour of 
new/modern, has ensured that viruses is acceptable now.

2. A comparable situation is with respect to data and bacteria. 
Both are plurals, the singular being datum and bacterium. None 
minds now-a-days sentences like: your data ia wrong; not a single 
bacteria was found in this sample.

3. It is true that virus derives from vish.
