[nukkad] Some changes @ 'nukkad'

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tip of the day: Include your e-mail address in all your messages.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi folks,

This is to let you know of some changes in the way 'nukkad' works and how it
affects you. For nearly two years, 'nukkad' was completely unmoderated - any
subscriber could post anything to the entire list. This was because we (Ninad
and I) felt that that was the best way to have open discussions. We have
learned much during the time 'nukkad' has been operational and now realise the
benefits of moderated discussions.

I have been moderating 'nukkad' on and off for the past couple of months. I
was not sure if it was workable and how it would affect the overall 'nukkad'
experience. I am now convinced that a lightly moderated list is much better
than a completely open one. If it were not for me filtering out the messages,
the list would have received dozens of 'Factoids on Sonia' along with an equal
number of fake virus warnings and various other off-topic messages. These
messages would have generated numerous responses all of which would
have overwhelmed 'nukkad'.

Yes, this moderation does take up some time from an already over-crowded work
schedule but this is the only way 'nukkad' can survive.

Some of the side-effects of a moderated 'nukkad' are:
 * Messages are not instantly propogated. They will be sent to the list the
next time Ninad or I read them.

 * Some of your messages may not make it to the list. This is not personal. We
don't have anything against you. It is likely that your message is a
repetition of a message posted on 'nukkad' in the very recent past. Or it
does not follow the list guidelines.

 * Messages arrive in clumps. This is because in our relentless pursuit of a
semblence of a normal life, we need some time to sleep, eat and pursue other
tasks normal humans do. Thus when we login and see a dozen or so messages
from you folks, we tend to send out 4-5 of them in a go.

 * The overall 'nukkad' experience will be improved (hopefully).

If you have an opinion on this change, please let me know. If you send your
response to the 'nukkad' address (nukkad-list@mumbai-central.com), it will
probably get posted to the list. If you send your response to me, I will
try my best to reply to it but will not post it.

Let's have fun!

Regards,
- 'shal

P.S. Ninad will be moderating 'nukkad' for the next few days. I will have
very limited e-mail access and may not be able to reply to your messages.
There could be a problem during this time - all messages may appear to
come from him. It becomes all the more important to include your e-mail
address in your messages so that people wanting to write to your directly
can do so easily.
