You are right about taxi tariffs being higher overseas. They don’t have
autorickshaws and three-wheeler public transport.
However, I suspect it is not the price of the Chevrolet Caprice Classic, but the
driver’s wages that make the taxi ride more expensive. In India where driver
wages are low ($100 per month), it is the price of the car that severely impacts
the tariff.
Although the big luxury land yachts of yore are sadly extinct, Indian
administration, still view automobiles as a luxury than a necessity.
Irrational taxation elevates auto prices to stiff levels and leads to ridiculous
mindsets that view a Hyundai Accent as a chauffeur-worthy limousine. A 2001
Chevrolet Impala in North America costs US$ 19,500 (Rs. 9.17 lakh). For that
amount in India, you can barely buy a 1992-design Opel Astra or a smaller
1995-design Mitsubishi Carisma-Lancer. Having spent the money we now outfit the
“luxury limousine” with a chauffeur.
