[nukkad] Thoughts on capital punishment?

The long-running trial of Timothy McVeigh came to an end today when
he was executed by lethal injection. 

I am not comfortable with state-sactioned murder and can't justify 
capital punishment. It does not deter crime and ends up being a
publicly-supported form of vengeance. It is not clear if it even helps
the victims and their families put the tragedy and the grief behind them.
Capital punishment lives one because of our tribal roots which
demand revenge for an act against the tribe.

In this day and age, does capital punishment make sense? What purpose
does it serve? Do you support it? Why?
