Thanks. I agree with you. Looks I misrepresented my own view. I never wanted
to defend McVeigh's action, nor glorify him. All I wanted to emphasize were
the following points;
1. Persecuting a pre-identified person and killing him is certainly a bigger
crime than causing death of a person or persons who are not intentionally
specific victims of the killer.
2. Killing for a cause [even false cause, though perceived to be genuine by
the killer] is lesser crime than killing for selfish purpose. In this case,
the perceived cause was state brutality in the exercise of law and order
maintenance function of the state [as per news report and comment in times
of India].
3. It is the experience in every country that the big manage to go scot free
while the less big are entrapped. USA is no exception. India too. Did we not
release dreaded militants in exchange for the daughter of a minister
[probably Mufti Mohammed Said], who, incidentally, was a doctor and had been
kidnapped? Are dreaded militants set free to secure the release of an
ordinary man's daughter? No, Sir, people are not equal even in democracies,
even in the Champion of Democracies, where no bones are made about toppling
popularly elected governments and propping up dictators. McVeigh was no
great man. Otherwise his life might have been spared. The only point to
ponder is that though justice is blindfolded, it does manage to peep through
a chink in the fold.
In summary, though I do not eulogise McVeigh, I do feel that his life should
have been spared, as it might well have been if he had been a heavy weight.
And yes, I do appreciate his calmness in death, and his litereary taste in
circulating the now famous Invictus in lieu of expressing a mundane desire
when asked for his last wish. I wish I am able to maintain that mental poise
and peace if I depart from this world in the like circumstances.
Regards.
