Dear Nukkies
             Last couple of weeks saw the premier of 3 blockbusters, Lagaan, 
Gadar and Pearl Harbour. In Lagaan a village cricket team beats a far 
superior team under a British ruler, whereas in reality cricketing minnows 
Zimbabwe thumps the Indian cricket team. In Gadar the hero saves his wife 
from Pakistani in-laws by single headedly fighting all and sundry including 
the mighty army, whereas in reality Pak sponsored terrorists and underworld 
dons are bringing the law enforcement machinery to its knees.  The list of 
such movies doesn’t end with Lagaan, Gadar, Mission Kashmir or Sarfarosh. As 
if to prove that nationalistic propaganda is not limited to Bollywood alone 
comes Pearl Harbour enhancing and reiterating the role of US as the world 
arbitrator. I admit that everyone should be patriotic but extreme patriotism 
leads to jingoism, which is what these movies inculcate to the public. Also 
such movies provide an easy escape route out of problems. No one should 
forget that any number of Lagaans will not rectify the shortcomings of 
Indian cricket team and no amount of Gadars will make Indian cops or armed 
forces efficient and vigilant and do not erase away the fact that a tiny and 
erratic nation like Pakistan can play deadly pranks and walk away scot free. 
Isn’t it time for filmmakers to come out with movies that are in tune with 
reality. Your opinion is welcome.
