Ragini,
This reminds me of the eternal battle between the head and the heart. 30-40
years ago, I would have vociferously sided with Net Geek and you. Decades
down the line, I have become wiser. Head no longer fascinates me. I have
discovered [rediscovering the wheel] , though too late, magical qualities in
heart, which I dismissed earlier, as a young doctor, as nothing but an organ
that pumps blood.
Films are not meant for facts or logic or reality. That is the domain of
documentaries.
Talking of reality vs. illusion, when the whole life is immersed in
illusion, why do we expect films to be devoid of it? Childhood is nurtured
on illusion. [Chanda mama ayenge, munne ko bahalainge; sone pari ayegi,
gudiya ko khilayegi; pachas kos tak maan bacche se kahati hai-- beta, choop
ho ja, nahin to gabbar singh aa jayega]. Youth is illusion itself.
[Pre-marriage, He thinks she is the most beautiful, sweetest girl on earth;
She thinks he is the only prince charming of her dreams, riding on the white
horse with wide wings and flowing main. Post-marriage, both think they are
right and understand the other; in reality, both are wrong and none
understands the other]. In old age, the old think they are very wise; the
young feel they are just old fools. Not only is each of the three stages an
illusion, the whole life itself, at spiritual level, a big illusion or maya.
Please do spare the poor film makers. Crores are spent making a film, and
only a small percentage succeed at the box office. This week end's Times of
India stated that after Ram aur Shyam, all films of Dev Anand [Devdutt
Pishorimal Anand] have flopped. And Ram and Shyam occurred about 30 years
ago. And Dev Anand is a sensible and respected, intelligent person.
