Guys,

I missed you all .....And hope that you missed me too..
But my annoying self is back now..
Those who have joined after I was off the list for a while, Pranaam.

I saw 'Lagaan' last week, Here is my review of this 'Period' film:

I saw Lagaan last week. And I was totally disappointed. This film was
touted as a 'Period Film'. And besides language there was nothing
'Periodic' about this film.

Lets talk about the title. 'Lagaan'. As everyone knows 'Lagaan' means tax.
Tell me frankly, after seeing the movie what more did you come to know
about 'Lagaan' besides what you already knew. Tell me how much lagaan a
farmer used to pay? The movie doesn;t even go into that. The whole emphasis
is on 'Dugna Lagaan' 'Tiguna Lagaan'. but please oh please why did the
movie not educate us about how much portion of the crops had to be given as
Lagaan by every farmer?

Now lets talk about the life at that time in Villages in India. Did you
come to know what did they use to eat? What was the life in the villages?
how much work these guys used to do in the farms? Where did they use to get
water from? What was the social structure in a village? Nope NADA.

The whole film is too black and white. There is a mukhiya, there is a
mason, there is a farmer, there is a guy from lower caste, there is a
waid(doctor) and there are ladies and kids. I dont need to see 'Lagaan' to
know that. What was needed is a deeper and more complete account of the
village life and the unfairness of lagaan.

And think about some ridiculous aspects of the story. The elglish mem falls
in love with a villager(may be because he is the hero and Amir Khan),
Villagers who have never even heard about cricket before, practise and win
the match against a team of english officers who may be playing cricket
since they were kids, our hero is not out batsman scoring over 100 runs and
hits a six on the last ball, a guy from lower caster(forgot his name in the
movie) has a defective right arm, he learnes cricket, how to bowl and does
spin bowling and his line and length will make Shane warne proud.

Give me a break.

If you want to see a 'Period' film, watch 'Gladiator', or watch 'Shakespear
in Love' or watch 'Do bigha Jameen'.

Or at least dont tout the film as 'Period' film when it is anything but.

Milind Sathe
