the rapid pace of technological innovations today makes obsolescence, of
technology and products, a real threat. we have seen a single value-added
service in cellular telephony - roaming - ruin the business plan for
satellite phones. the most ambitious global telecom project - iridium,
promoted by the telecom giant motorola - went bankrupt with horrendous
financials - a loss of USD 500 mio on revenues of USD 5 mio.
now there's an innovation taking place in data communication. a documentary
on BBC yesterday cited a project aiming at using power cables for data
communication. researchers have found a way to send data packets through
ordinary live power cables along with electricity, successfully testing the
protocol for removing interference of electricity with data.
thus data & images reach your home and to your electrical & electronic
appliances along with electricity and every electric socket in the house
becomes an internet port. just plug in your PC / notebook / microwave /
music system in the electric socket and it's internet ready. normal
electronic products with imbedded chips are being developed, and you would
soon be starting or shutting your washing machine from your hotel a 1000 kms
away.
a single utility provider would provide you electricity, cable TV,
telephone, internet, video (and many future info services) through a single
cable connected to your home. your existing power connection and electric
wire network would hot-wire your home or office @ 14 mbps.
siemens has already demonstrated products to explode the optical fibre
bandwidth by 100 times. would we then need the OFC network being laid across
the world at astronomical costs to increase the available OFC bandwidth 500
times by 2003? what would be the business case of bandwidth providers?
i refer to my email of 20-nov-00 on bharti telecom on its exponential growth
through acquisitions.
globally, the telecom & media & IT companies need to take better stock of
the technological environment before taking rash decisions rather than face
more "meltdowns" a.k.a dotcoms. a case in point is the massive fees paid for
3G licences in europe which can NEVER be earned with business mobile
products, and would invariably need government subsidies.
the first mover might not always be the gainer here.
