Dear MC Guptaji
By the statement “movies in tune with reality”, I don’t mean
that movies should mirror real life. I’m no fan of art movies of the Mrinal
Sen/Adoor Goplakrishnan & Co genre. Nor do I insist that movies should be
devoid of fantasy and supernatural aspects. I had my fair share of Superman,
Batman, and Spiderman. But then remember those are all fictitious
characters bearing no resemblance to anyone in real life. While dealing
with current affairs like Cricket and Pakistan, isn’t it better to reflect
things at least close to reality rather portraying them diagonally opposite.
Also what about using movies as propaganda machinery? As long as the
propaganda is for the betterment of humanity it is perfectly all right but
on the other hand if it is used to instil jingoism and false illusion about
the nation, things start moving in the wrong track. With regards to the
purpose of making movies, I fully agree with you that producer’s main motive
is to make profit but then is that alone the only motive. In spite of the
filmmakers having no responsibility to reform the society I believe that
because of the fact that movies command a mass audience and since movies
influence people a lot, films should be practical as well as logical and the
filmmaker has an unwritten role in it. Just my humble opinion.

Bye
