Mr Gupta,
I understand the point of view of head, heart, logic, reality and illusion
in life and films per se.
But the point we were talking was ..these films were projected to be coming
with an objective, a period in history, an aim which was supposedly telling
or depicting some things of a bygone era.
Which they failed, in my, and many others'opinion, too......(at this
juncture Milind Sathe's coming back has been God sent......welcome back
Milind). Milind's point of view too supports the question raised.
Saving rewriting the failures of the movies concerned, I too say films are
for entertainment...you do not expect any goodness, but fun from the,
run-of-the-mill kind of film. Me a big fan of Govinda's perfectly timed
comedy ( whatever one may say) do not see his movie for anything but fun
and am not at all disappointed in the end.
But the same does not hold true for 'Lagaan' and 'Gadar"...you feel taken
for a ride after seeing them. Though they both had good acting, excellent
music, good visuals...allsaidanddone, but still what was the hype about?
And who says reality based films be documentaries. They can come with
audience holding powers...but we reject them. Cause they hit us hard...Was
'Astitva" not a well made film with reality based storyline..but see the
result. 'Jungle' was a sincerely made film, but again rejected as devoid of
stuff-in-demand.
Should we doubt the intellegentia of we audience? Or appreciate the
film-maker's business sense?
Well, it can be a very interesting debate but i leave it here.
Secondly, with due respects, incidentally...."Ram aur Shyam" had nothing to
do with Dev Anand..this is just FYI.
Regards.
