'Shal and Mubashir,
I agree that the movie was not too boring.. But I personaly felt cheated
that one whole hour was wasted on an unrealistic cricket match. Sure as a
cricket match it was not boring to watch. But Associating the title, and
the first half of the movie to a 60 minute+ cricket match was a bit too
much.
The biggest problem I had with the movie was that it was marketed as a
'Period' film. If they had said that it is just pure entertainment, I would
have no problems with the movie. When you go for a movie you have some
expectations. And those expectations come from what you read about the
movie.
I probably made a mistake of reading about it. But I read about it on
Lagaan's official website.
Go to 'http://lagaan.indiatimes.com'. Read the production notes, interviews
with Amir Khan, see the animation and photographs they have on the website.
And see what expectations the makers of this movie have built. Nowhere in
the whole website or any of the previews there is a mention of an hour long
cricket match. The emphasis is on 'Lagaan'. That was a great anticlimax.
Sure, they wanted to keep the cricket as a surprise. But I think the writer
and director lost the steam and the direction of the story and then they
came up with this idea of padding the film with this cricket match. Tell me
frankly, the cricket match was almost 35-40% of the movie. And besides the
emotional and patriotic appeal what was realistic in that cricket match.
Dont you think, that the movie was made of two different patches, one
before the match and the rest of the movie?
I mean cricket match is fine, the movie is ok, the direction is smooth, the
movie is much better than the typical Bollywood movies. But Hey, please
dont make us believe and expect something and then cheat us.
Cheers
Milind

It's one hell of an entertaining movie and not once did I feel bored. It's
pretty absurd to delve into technicalities of movie, after all it is not
about life and death but pure whole some entertainment, and what more can
you want then a lethal combination of cricket and patriotism.
Do Bigha Zameen is not a period film, it is a film of today. You see that
happening even now.Don't forget that farmers still commit suicide in our
country due to ever multiplying debts.
Watch 'Lagaan' for sure and don't tax your self too much.
