I wholeheartedly agree with Harshal.

This film is a very good example of good story telling. And going by the
reaction of the people in the theatre I think its a very successful attempt
indeed.

There is no parallel of this story in Indian history so it is simply a tale
told well.
So there is no question of calling it a "Period film".

It even begins like a fairy tale "Once upon a time in India"
Thats what it is and thats how we should look at it.

If you want to know about proper history, Shyam Benegal's "Discovery of
India" series on TV is a shining example.

Wanting education about lagaan thro this film is like going to see 'Gandhi'
to get knowledge about Gandhi.
Like H'shal has said it is NOT a documentary.

No offense Mr Milind Sathe, I guess I am overjoyed seeing you back on the
list ;--)
Please treat this as a welcome back message. (Harshal please rate for
Sarcasm content :--)))
