yaron kaho,
do lash, ek momin* ek kafir*

na ye bole, na ye chale
dono ki atma, hawa me dhale

na kisi ko pata, kon ek duja
kis ki ibadat*, kiski puja

sham ho chali, akhri mukam*
kis lash ka kya hona, akhri dham

kis ko jalave, kis ko gare?
kis ko chita par, kon mitti* dare?

momin* ke mathe par kya nishan*?
kafir kafas* ki kaho kya pahichan*?

ruh* agar juda, aur ruh par jana
to kaho kaise ruh ko pahichana?

jabh tak na pave jawab
man ek hari ke bacche, isi me sawab*

word-meaning:
hindi has a great admixture of urdu-persian-arabic. this style incorporates
all three to render subcontinental verse vivid. some meanings for those
unfamiliar with the genre.

momin - chaste follower
kafir - unbeliever
ibadat - a form of bhakti
akhri mukam - antim sthan, last station
mitti - grave gravel
nishan - sign, indicator
kafas - sharir, body
pahichan - recognition
ruh - atma
sawab - fruit of faith; parallel word, jawab
