is Indian nationalism of recent origin?
well I wld say yes and no.
while a feeling of oneness had existed in this land for a very long time, it was indeed ruled by so many kings. but people cared for no borders. they have for centuries traveled the entire width and breadth of this land in pilgrimages. they were welcomed everywhere and cared for.
kings came and went but people cared for themselves at the village level and got on with life. which government built patasalas and vaidhya salas?the local wealthy people. there has been complete decentralisation of governance. excepting security and large projects like digging lakes the kings did little else for the people. it is only after the advent of the British raj that people started looking to govt  for things and now sadly they look no where else.
if nation is the people and their culture and not the political map, certainly there has been one nation for centuries.
