Thanks, Kapil, for your nice words. I fully agree with you. I
forgot to mention one thing in reply to Majid Khan's mail. He
stated that man is by nature omnivorous. This is scientifically
contestable. Man has developed from the great apes who are
herbivorous. Man's cecum and appendix testify to his herbivorous
origin, as also probably his dental design. I will try to get more
info on this if I get time.
I agree with you 100% that it is tragic to kill an animal who
loves to live as much as we do. If we kill other beings, our heart
and conscience cannot remain pure, innocent and benevolent. If I
have no compunction about killing an animal with my own
hands---that too, an animal who has been almost a member of my
household, whose milk I have drunk, with whom I have played, whom
I have caressed and fondled--- then why should I have any qualms
about killing a man with whom I do not agree, whose treasure I
covet or who is my enemy? I just cannot understand what lesson
muslim children might be learning when they see their parents
bring a he-goat, feed it well every day and take good care of it,
and then, one day, on Bakr-id, all of a sudden, take out a sword,
severe its head, open up its entrails and eat it up!! Where is the
message of love and fathfulness to others? May be that is why
Muslim history is replete with son killing father and brothers to
ascend the throne. Such examples are rare in Hindu history. On the
contrary, there are umpteen examples of Hindu kings renouncing
all, anointing the son as the king, and going to jungles for ever
[vanvas].
If you reflect, the essential difference between Hindu, muslim and
Christian religions is that the latter two believe that man is
supreme and is meant to rule over all other creatures and
subjugate not only them but the whole nature as such. Bible says
very clearly that god made man on the seventh day and told him:
go forth and rule over all the animals and the birds, because they
are meant to serve you. No wonder man got the message that he is
the lord and master of all animals and can kill them, eat them or
torture them or otherwise exploit them as he pleases, because in
doing so, he is simply carrying out god's command. Contrast this
with the Hindu message that all, animals and man, are one; the
same soul pervades through them all; all are manifestations of the
same godly energy or spirit; man is just like animals, has no
special right over them and is even supposed to save them, not
kill them. The janism, an offshoot of hinduism, places such
importance upon ahimsa [non-violence]that the jain saints always
cover their mouth with a cloth, so that even inadvertantly, an
insect may not enter their mouth and get killed!

Mr. Gupta,
That was so informative. I really appreciate it.
I'd like to share something with you: What really bugs
me is that people talk of human rights; humans
shouldn't be killed, but look at the way they treat
animals. Cow meat is fed to cows: isn't this brutal?
When you kill an animal, you can see it struggles to
live, it wants to survive but their throat is slit,
and people have all the insipid reasons to justify the
cause. Is this civilisation?
Kapil
PS: Animals being fed with their own meat is a crime
in my opinion.
