Dear Kapil & Guptaji
                    On one hand there is the call for true secularism (read 
ending minority appeasement) but on the other hand is the clamour for 
enforcing ban on cow slaughter (read majority appeasement). Now how is it 
going to work.  If Hindus can insist on ban on cow slaughter, then on what 
grounds can Muslims be asked to stop practices like Polygamy and seperate 
persoal laws?

Also Kapil if it was the life saving aspect that you are interested in, then 
why not fight against female infanticide the prevelance of which is the most 
among Hindus.

Friends if India is to become a secular and liberal democratic replublic, 
then none of the above practices should have any place. Leave ditary choices 
to the individual. If you feel that eating beef is hurting your concience, 
the please desist from consuming it. Don't try to impose it on others who 
don't feel so.

PS: I'm no great beef lover. I stopped it couple of years back for dietary 
reasons (except for the occasional one). I'm viewing the whole issue from a 
civil liberties angle.
