Just a minor response to a major question:

I have studied in a Catholic school (St. Anthony's High School, Vakola) in Mumbai. And so have a couple of my friends. I don't remember attending school prayers. Nor was I ever asked to go to church - although I DID go there to see what the place was like. I also happen to remember the prayers that were said - but we were not forced to say those prayers. I believe my grandfather had gon, along with a few other Hindu student's parents and requested the school that the non-Catholic students be exempted from anything Catholic at school. And they agreed.
