I would say killing of any life has it's own share of "papa"attached to it. people have to decide for themselves where they draw the line.
"himsa" lies in the intention as much as it lies in the act. thus a soldier killing an enemy is correct. punishing thieves etc...you get the drift.
only for a sanyasin 'ahimsa " is supreme dharma. not for all. there are various degrees of sanyasa described. for the highest stage -- he is expected to survive only on water and what has fallen from the trees (not plucked) including leaves.

however most plants are harvested and they can continue to live, some times grow better.

2.the body is a wonderful thing. it can adopt to many problems faced by it.that is how "evolution"has taken place. obviously we have had the ability to digest uncooked food be it veg or non veg before the use of fire came to be known. cooking which broke down the tissues and made it more easily digestible has robbed us the ability to digest such food any more. this is "evolution"!
