---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tip of the day: Prune messages that you are forwarding or replying to include only the relevant material. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Ghanshyam, Here are the answers to your questions. I am posting a copy yo the nukkad list also for wider dissemination of facts. Q1. what do you think of consuming eggs? A. Dietary habits are a matter of personal choice. My thinking does not matter, except to me. But certain facts are there, which apply to everybody. These are as follows: a. As per standard medical advice, eggs are best not eaten; if eaten, then in moderation. Eggs have too much cholesterol. b. Eggs have protein, but this protein is more expensive than from other sources, even taking into account protein quality. In any case, there is no protein deficiency in the world, as agreed by all scientists today. c. Eggs are source of infection, which may lead to gastro-enteritis and typhoid etc. d. Eating eggs is not an economical activity. Eggs come from chicken and chicken are raised on grain. A unit area of earth yields 6 times more veg food than non-veg food. e. Eggs add to protein in diet, while often, especially in affluent societies, the need is to reduce dietary protein and fat, so as to reduce incidence of heart disease and cancer. Q. what do you think of consuming milk? A. Same general remarks as above. Facts are as follows: a. Animal milk is not needed by humans. Milk is needed in infancy for at least 6 months. Mother nature takes care of that in the form of human milk. b. There are societies where there is no practice of milk drinking. Some tribes rear cattle but do not drink milk; they use cattle only as beast of burden and source of meat. c. Milk is non-veg diet by definition. But a yardstick often used to distinguish veg from non-veg food is the violence implicit in the latter. In that sense, milk is regarded as part of veg diet in india. d. Milk, contrary to popular belief, is not a complete food. It particularly lacks in iron. However, mother’s milk is complete food [including water needs] for the baby of the species concerned. Please note that all milks are not same. There are very significant differences, tailored to the needs of the young of the particular species concerned. Q. is being a vegan a degree higher than being a vegetarian? A. I do not know what is a vegan. Probably it means a person who does not take even milk. In that case, a vegan is a degree higher than a vegetarian. Higher spiritually as well as medically. [in saying so, it is presumed that he is taking a complete well balanced diet of purely vegan origin]. This is because such diet will be much more free from causative agents of disease [infection; excess salt, protein, animal fat and cholesterol; lack of dietary fibre and anti-oxidants, which prevent against cancer]. Q. . in this kind of hierarchy construct, is there a goal? what is higher than being a vegan? can animates get energy from totally inamate world? A. Yes, there appears to be a goal. But the goal is a distant and difficult one. The goal probably is to achieve a state when man is spititually so much advanced that he transcends laws of the physical world as we know it. You might have read The Autobiography of a Yogi by swami Paramhans Yogananda. If you have, you would get the answer to your question from that book. If you have not, you must do so. If you have difficulty finding it, contact “Self Realization Fellowship, 3880 San Rafael Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90065”. Therein are described documented instances of Indian and christian saints who live on pure air, water, and solar energy and have not eaten a morsel in decades. Swami Yoganand himself had not probably attained this level. You would remember Parvati is stated to have lived for a thousand years on leaves, then another 1000 years on air and water during her tapa to get Shiva as her husband. That is why she is called aparna. If a Christian lady saint in France can avhieve this [as described in the Autobiography], there is no reason why an Indian goddess could not achieve even higher things. You might be surprised at this talk coming from an erstwhile professor of medicine at AIIMS and a current law-man [i have already completed my LL.M. exams and hope to get the degree this year] who, by training, is taught to separate grain from chaff and to be purely objective and a stickler for documented facts]. But, yes, i am serious and mean every word of what i have written.
