[nukkad] Top 10 books

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tip of the day: If you are patient in one moment of anger, you will escape
a hundred days of sorrow. - Chinese Proverb
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Nukkies,
I deliberately delayed my posting to read others'
choices.
It was exciting to see that people from all walks of
life enjoy virtually the same or similar books.
By the way, the most read, published, translated and
thumbed book of all time is the Holy Bible.
And in my house, the MTNL telephone directory.( Ha
Ha!!)

Here is my list:

1. UNCLE TOM'S CABIN

One of the twelve books to have changed the history of
the world.

Harriet Beecher Stowe based Tom's character on a slave
she had met. After writing the book, when she
approached the Publisher, they allowed a print of 2500
copies. Needless to say, the book sold out in 1
hour..or so they say. By the end of 1 week, 120,000
copies had been sold, and the printer could barely
cope with the orders.
Abraham Lincoln read the book and congratulated the
Author.
His subsequent actions are said to have been inspired
by the book's description of the travails that Tom and
his people faced . The American Civil War that
resulted, led to the abolition of Slavery from the New
World.
Read the whole book online at:
http://americanliterature.com/MAIN.HTML

This web-site has great books by Mark Twain, also
rated by me as among the best books of all time,
although I recommend that you read them first:
2. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (")
3. Catch 22..Joseph Heller. The term has entered
Common Usage.
4. River God: I doubt that this book has been read by
anyone. It is written by Wilbur Smith, a fantastic
writer of a family saga, spanning 15 novels set in
Africa of the 18th and 19th Century A.D.( the Courtney
Novels)..a must read.
In River God, the story is set in Egypt, in the
Egyptian Empire. The details and imagery will take
your breath away.
Go and read it.
5.To Kill A Mockingbird...Enough said..a classic book
6.Edgar Allan Poe:
How many Nukkies have had the pleasure to read his
horror stories, poems and tales of Mystery?
DO NOT MISS THIS, FRIENDS !!
7. The Hunchback of Notre-Dame.
Victor Hugo's other book , but with a heart of Gold.
8.The Agony and the Ecstasy, irving Stone's biography
of Michaelangelo. Read it.
9. Ayn Rand's books.
10.John Grisham's books.
esp. The Client, The Chamber, The Pelican Brief and
his latestbook not based on lawyuers..something called
the House In the Field or something like that..sorry,
can't remember! The last is his best book.

I hope I have not bored you all....
Bye.
