Re: [nukkad] Top 10 books

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tip of the day: If you are patient in one moment of anger, you will escape
a hundred days of sorrow. - Chinese Proverb
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anybody read "Darkness at noon" by Arthur Koestler, or seen "silence of
the lambs" with anthony hopkins.

these are among my top 10 novels and movies.

well, that silence movie impressed me so thoroughly that anthony hopkins
became my role model. I wanted to acquire skills so that I could "know"
a persons background just by seeing him or talking to him for any short
while. It is totally like mind reading.

and jodie foster's single minded following of her intuition. If I could
have even 1% of that. btw, the phrase "I am having an old friend for
dinner" originated in this film as hopkins played a cannibal.

Then I like Ayn rand's fountainhead. I could not appreciate atlas
shrugged, as I thought it ends with an escapist, aryan supremacy type
attitude that the gifted ones went away to their secret site while
common man burnt in the cities. In any case it was a fantasy life,
whereas fountain was a real life character that I wanted to emulate.
Though I could not understand what she meant when he made him rape her
in mines.

Jean paul sartre's the flies also impressed me a lot, and I became a
rebel of authority for the heck of it.

I also like action flicks die hards (nakotomi plaza and with a venge),
terminator 1 and 2, predator 1, commando, first blood, speed 1, alien
series, zurassic park, cat people, macenna's gold.

terminator 1's "it is not everyday that you come to know that you are
responsible for three billion deaths" still gives me many a nightmare.
and "a machine a terminator can learn human values. Maybe, we can, too"
gives me hope.

I like gladiator also for the concept.

other novels are animal farm and 1984 - george orwell, albert camus'
writing.

in hindi, I like Malati Joshi's stories in hindi. I have read every of
the 250+ novels of Surendra Mohan pathak in hindi.

In non-fiction, I find "7 habits of highly effective people - stephan r
covey" and the fifth discipline - philosophy of a learning organisation
"peter m senge" most useful.

If you have not read the second one (5th discipline) you can never
really solve a problem. It gives the systems approach how to go the very
core of a problem to find what is the root cause, so as to solve it.

It also tells about difference between a dialogue and a discussion. in
current turmoil on the nukkad, i wonder if someone can punch in those
three pages and post. anybody understanding the difference will never
cause problem on the list.

ALL THOSE WHO HAD MENTIONED THEIR FAV NOVELS/ MOVIES must give at least
some whys of that. what you gained by that?

love.
