I think it is because batteries provide 'power'
and the first thing anyone with specs in India
talks about is their 'power'.
(e.g., tera power kitna hai? Mera -1.5 hai.
Aiala - power hai matlab battery hai kya? etc.)
I would imagine this is the reason for the 'ab'usage.

The above gels with my understanding that it is for the same reason
that the one wearing sunglasses (powerless goggles) is not called
name 'battery'.
