WAYS OF THE NUKKAD

I, Nukkad, have been in human experience since the day two roads came upon
each other of a sudden to meet at a corner. Those who walked upon one road
did not know what was on the other side, and had to turn the corner to find
out. Men and women soon learned that I held many mysteries and would deliver
these only by experience so to experience the Nukkad you had to go to the
Nukkad.

Many were the languahes I have heard since times immemorial. There were
those in earliest Hind who spoke an early form of Brahmi, which was in
widespread use before ever the world came to know of Asoka. Over centuries I
heard the words of the Taxilans, Harrapans, Dravidi, and other tongues of
the indegenous peoples. Next came the Aryas with their Vedas, mispronouncing
Sapta Sindhus to Hapta Hindus, which gave my land the misnomer of Hind,
whence Scind, Ind and India. I saw and heard the Mongols who later became
tame Moghuls, zealots from the samarkand and Bokhara, Greeks and Persians
who came to trade, Chinese from far Hunan, Omani sailaors, Yemeni
businessmen, Zanzibaris and Andamanis from the Islands. Many kinds came to
the Nukkad and went their own way.

Nukkad does not belong to anyone, not to those who come and go as ships in
the night, nor the Keepers who care for me. By my nature all will arrive
here, the good with the bad, the smiling with the sad, the open hearted and
those with ulterior motives, the simple ones and the bigots, the silent ones
and the fanatics. I do not deny access to anyone, but if my simple ways are
not held sacred, the ones who need to go disappear. I am the forum for
exchange of human experiences, the bhava of anubhava.

Many have tried to build barriers on the roads which lead here, and in which
case I was no longer Nukkad but a prisoner held in chains by my own
children. I am the first experience of free speech to many villagers and
city dwel;lers. It is sadly when I am not allowed to allow freedom of speech

I will remain forever extant if freedom is not extinguished. There has
always been turbulence and strife and contention and bigotary at my corner.
But through this there is born understanding and tolerance which then brings
in the occasional peace.

Over centuries many have asked of me, Nukkad, who ar you? I have always
answered the same, I am your expoerience. Tamsi anubhavatam.

Namarskaram Sarvenum.
