Re: [nukkad] High priority message...

Tip of the day: Do not meddle with dragons for thou art crunchy and
                 taste good with ketchup

This message connected two completely unrelated issues and created
a bogus scenario.

Yes, there is a slowdown in the US economy and yes, Microsoft has
announced their .NET initiative. These are 2 independent events.

Because of the downturn, people have lost jobs all across the board -
from sales to marketing to engineering. People doing Java development
have been affected just as badly as anyone else. However, server side
Java is still a very hot field and people are being recruited by
companies doing this kind of work. The demand may have cooled down
but the technology is still very much 'in' and thriving.

The .NET initiative was announced over six months back and is still
in the very early stages. The first concrete plan (not a product)
was announced early this week - Hailstorm. While .NET (typographers
and typesetters everywhere are cursing Microsoft for coming up with this
name) will definitely have an impact on the kind of development done
in the coming years, I doubt it will make a dent anytime soon - especially
in the Java market. To attribute the recent lay-offs to this
plan is to give too much credit to a very vaguely-defined proposal.

As was always the case, H1-B folks should be very careful about who they
are signing up with and make sure that they won't end up on the bench
for months just because their contractor screwed up. Be sure to
check the references and credentials of the company to avoid
problems later.

Best wishes,
- 'shal
