THEY ALSO WORK WHO SERVE AT HOME
[A write-up in The Hindu, 19 November, 2002]

While much has been written about career women, the
ones working at home are usually left unsung. "To me,
every woman is working whether inside or outside the
house", began a chief guest at a public function. The
average day of the "non-working" woman begins at 5.30
am. Apart from attending to the door bell, phone and
vegetable vendor, she also has to get breakfast ready,
pack lunch and then the next task. . . to wake the
family deep in slumber. Once they have emerged from
under the bedcovers, the first complaint is that the
temperature of the water is not right. Buttons
dangling from shirtsleeves, incomplete homework,
demands for auto fare - to be attended to by the
non-working woman at home, while making sure the
breadfast does not burn.

The scene changes for the better, once the family has
left. There is a sense of relief once the door is
closed behind them even though the house resembles a
storm-hit area, with debris littered all over. But
there is a long list of orders left for the rest of
the day. The better half requests her to lodge a
complaint with the Telephone Exchange since the
instrument is out of order and also pick up a bottle
of his scented hair oil. The kids want a textbook that
is most likely out of print as well as return the long
overdue library books. Added to these insurmountable
tasks are those of the maid's since she decides not to
turn up. So the non-working woman weeps but sweeps,
mopes but mops and when she is finally through with
the chores, runs out to do the shopping and returns to
find the home team back as well.

And the story goes on of dinner cooked and served,
table laid and cleared, more jobs undertaken and
accomplished and the lights being turned off - being
the last to go to bed - and on again, as she is the
first to rise the next morning.

Shakespeare wrote of the seven stages of man but who
is to write of the many roles of the Indian woman -
cook, driver, seamstress, teacher, maid and secretary,
sans pay, sans bonus and sans leave.

So appreciate and applaud them for they also work who
serve at home. A simple smile or a soft thank you is
all it takes.
