Scars of Conflict

The lines you seen upon my careworn face
and the knitted furrows upon my brow,
were not caused, alone, by the sun’s bright rays
Nor the painful sting of a broken vow; 
Nor yet by the wearisome length of days;
For life’s battles rage with a thundering roar
As I tread the thronged path on life’s highways
where sin’s allurements tempt me o’er and o’er.

But the arrow of an unkind word or deed
has pierced my soul and left an ugly mark,
For, like a sharp stone cast with lightning speed
It struck, and broke my glass house in the dark.

Thus, all who reach the afternoon of life
Bear the scars of contending sword and strife.
