I have never heard this song but when I read this email, I remembered
hearing about a radio segment this song and its history. A quick
search revealed that it was included in "The NPR 100  - The most
important American musical works of the 20th century"

radio segment I remember hearing was probably the one about how some
people were asking their governor to pardon Tom Dooley
(http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=1147658).

Pretty amazing how the mind works - linking disparate things and
remembering strange snippets from the past.
