[nukkad] Credit cards:Are we safe ?

Hi all,
Just when I think of taking a credit card, some news like below pops 
in. So which card is the safest one? and do I really need a credit card ?

Techie held for credit card fraud

New Delhi: A software engineer has been arrested by the special cell 
for a credit card fraud worth Rs 35 lakh. Anmol Gupta alias Alankar 
Aggarwal used to transfer funds over the internet of credit card 
holders and make purchases with the money.
     He told police he had been involved in such fraud since 2004 
when he worked with a call centre in Bangalore. The accused had been 
arrested for his involvement in a similar fraud by the Bangalore 
police, but the matter was settled after he paid the dues to the 
concerned banks. He later shifted to Delhi and took up a job with a 
call centre here.
     The accused said he would visit various banks and note down 
credit card numbers and CVV numbers of credit card holders. He would 
log on to the Net and transfer the money to his HSBC debit card.
     The arrest was made after the police received information from 
fraud control units of several banks whose customers complianed about 
card charges of purchases they never made. The complaints were from 
across the country and the cops were unable to zero in on any city. 
Finally, they were able to single him out after a tipoff from HSBC.
