Re: [nukkad] Hotels in Mumbai

Carola,

You probably misunderstood. Neither Rohit meant anything regarding your
travel plans, nor did I. I have mentioned earlier that I have stayed in
Youth hostels abroad. One was in Calgary, Canada. But staying in a youth
hostel did not mean staying 'cheap' or vulgar or inappropriately or in
revolting and defiant non-conformance with the host country's culture, for
which the tourists of the 8 dollars round the globe hippy culture of the
yester years were known for. They even begged in Indian cities, and their
dress and sexual mores publicly displayed were revolting. I have seen stark
naked white foreigner men and women on Goa beach, where hundreds of Indian
tourists, including women and children, were present. In any other country,
they would have been jailed straightway. In Singapore, there is 500 dollar
fine for spitting on the roadside, I am told. While driving in Ottawa, I had
to stop my car for 5 minutes to go to the roadside shop while my wife and
young kids were inside. There came a policeman and I had to pay 50 dollars
fine. The road, BTW, was almost empty. Such things don't happen in India,
almost never to foreigners, whom Indians, by and large, respect and help,
even going out of the way to do so.

Your comments that "I hope at least some of you do welcome tourists even if
they can't afford spending thousands of dollars for their travels" are
grossly misplaced. I don't hold them against you, since you are obviously
ignorant of the facts. You will change your views once you spend some time
here. And, I am sure nukkad friends in Mumbai would certainly see to it.
