What a short memory!  The "8 dollars around the world" has nothing to do
with Hippie culture!
8 dollars was all that the Reserve bank of India would allow you to change
officially into foreign exchange when you left India on a foreign trip.
I remember there was a song that went "Around the world in 8 dollars".
It also spawned a whole set of cartoons from R K Laxman, on the amount of
shopping you could do for that kind of money.
What Rohit was talking of as increased fares has nothing to do with being
Indian or foreign. If you paid for a ticket it US Dollars or foreign
exchange on the domestic sector, you paid more simply because you were
paying th IATA or international rates. If you paid for a ticket in Indian
rupees it was different because all airline markets have a domestic fare.
This has only changed very recently as in the last 10 years or so.
