This brings to memory another old custom, of Indian social origin being
practised in Oman
until very recently, say 15 years ago when it was banned by the force of
law. Omanis like
us Indians used to give to and take dowry from the bride's father, a
practice at variance with
Islamic code set for Muslim's nikah ( wedding ). According to Islamic
tenets, girl's father
receives a prefixed sum, Meher, for giving away his daughter, which is
exactly the opposite
of dowry. When the formal announcement to ban dowry was made some years
ago, that
age old practice was dubbed pre-Islamic, pagan and anti-Islamic. It was
clear to just
everybody that they had ' Hindu custom ' prevalent among many Omanis in
mind but
the wording fell short of mentioning it !! Perhaps India's ancient ties,
perhaps presence of
several hundered thousand Indians on their soil, whatever may be the
reason ................
