Hello Dr.M.C.G and Dr Taher, (Longish but try to read) Guptajji, when you write something that is neither legalese nor verse it seems to make a lot more sense. For once I agreed with a majority of the points that you quoted. However there is not that degree of liberalism in Hinduism as you claim in your post. The offices of Sarita may not have been burnt but there are Valentine parties vandalised, the hindu right wing organisations resort to enough violence in the name of hinduism, be it be burning of effigies or ransacking and destruction of cinema halls. As for Dr. Taher's question "How to ditch a book that is purportedly directly received from the Almighty?" The key word is "purportedly". I doubt that the almighty ever interferes in our lives or shapes our actions. And the very act of having His teachings handed over to humanity in the form of a book is incredible. The very foundation of religions is to make their followers follow the faith either due to AWE or due to FEAR. These two factors will be found in every religion. You will NOT act in a certain way either because the Lord prohibits or you will be punished for it. These are two basic foundations. So the teachings of the Lord coming in a book are what is the AWE factor. Would you follow them so rigidly if the prophet said that they were HIS interpretations of Islam? Also this making people believe that the Lord came forth to have his teachings documented was enough for a few centuries back but in the current 21st century continuing to believe this seems to bme a little bit immature. An intellectual can only proceed by questioning things not by blind faith. There is nothing harmful to think contrary to your religion. Gautam Buddha became the founder of his religion only because he chose to think beyond Hinduism and decided to leave it. We should all try to be Gautam Buddha to an extent. Do not blindly follow things. Learn to think for ourselves. Religion is not the ONLY means to morals, honesty and integrity.
