Re: [nukkad] The veil

Dear All,

Thank you very much for an intelligent dissection of Islam and its
principles. This is much appreciated by me. You all have helped
crystallise some of my own thinking in several matters.

Guptaji, you asked: What is the similarity between Quran, on the one
hand, and Mahavir Jain, Ganesh and Shiva, on the other?

>>None in the usual sense. What I was trying to say is that hurting or
damaging the Quran may be as bad, or even worse , th

                             an,damaging or defiling those
statues/symbols of the other religions. I would not be as readily
agreeable as you to say that Hindus or Jains will be more tolerant of
such defilings or damage to their own religious symbols.

Only last Sunday, some Hindus defiled a Jain derasar in Mumbai, and
there was huge hungama at Byculla Police station at that time. Perhaps
rohit has heard of it. There is a big Jain morcha on Wednesday to
garner support for their cause.

intrafamily, intra-society or other form of interpersonal problems.

About Arabic language, almost all Muslims learn to read the Quran and
other Arabic texts, but when it comes to understanding the text, a
very few people actually do. For example, they are Gulf-returned
people or those who are moulvis or scholars of Arabic. And herein lies
the chief problem of Islam, as very rightly put by MCG and VKV.
Muslims MUST agree to make an attempt to read and under

                                                         stand the
Holy Quran. I was speaking to a patient's mother today and showed her
some of these posts. She said, she was against the people reading from
a translation, not because they dound this irreligious, but because
our head priest has forbidden her and us from reading it. What a sorry
state of affairs, don't you think?

VKV is right. Muslim speak the local language and have kept Arabic
only to pray or conduct religious ceremonies such as bethrotals,
burials etc. In most such cases, the verses are read from the Quran,
although other Arabic prayers are also available and have been
designed in keeping with the type of occasion and its solemnity.

I wish I had the same optimism that Ravi has when he brushes off the
problems as being due to the newness of the religion. I have no hopes
of Islam turning a new leaf.
