i am not sure abt rig veda- it may differ a little.
in yajur veda after each passage a line appears. it carries the first word
of [every sentence or every fifty words] and how many words remain.
that way one can be sure a word has not been added or deleted inadvertently.
it also serves as a mnemonic.
similarly a chapter will carry a line with the first words of each passage
and how many words are left.
