An American friend, from the Northern states yet! told me that the Civil war
was not fought to liberate the slaves. The South were
industrially/economically superior to the North and the latter were facing a
sure depression.
Wanting a piece of the action and the fact that they could kick-start the
economy by providing the arms industry a boost in wartime, the North used
slavery as an excuse.
Sounds depressingly familiar does it not?
