The Egyptian Saidi is different. They are those from Port Said and are the
butt of many jokes, much like our sardars. The community you speak of from
the South of Egypt are the original residents of Egypt or the aborigines,
those are the Nubians.

My question came from a remote connection I made with Sidi Bel Abes an
Algerian town which is the home of teh French Foreign Legion.
Here is a joke about Saidi's not very nice but funny..
A Saidi policeman on duty hears some sounds of people in a Garden/Bush.
Being new he shouts come out of there now! And sure enough out comes a man
rather scantily dressed. Okay what were u doing asks the Saidi policeman.
"Fornication sir, he says , and the Saidi starts looking for the exact crime
number to prepare a report, when a woman emerges after suitably covering
herself. Aha says the Saidi, there were two of u!!!"

hit film that pokes fun at Westernized Egyptians has managed to anger
Israel and the American University in Cairo as well as point up deep
differences in this Arab country's society. ``Saidi at the American
University,'' tells the story of Khalaf, a bumpkin southern Egyptian who
wins a scholarship to study at the university whose students -- many from
Cairo's upper class -- are known for their Americanized attitudes. The
``saidi,'' the Arabic word for a southern Egyptian, runs into trouble from
his first day.
